The State Of America

During the first week of January, I wrote an article for Etherzone in anticipation of last night’s State Of The Union Speech.  While I still stand by the tone of that article and the sense of frustration it projected, let me also say that the real thing was a pleasant surprise, and I believe Mr. Bush did a more than adequate presidential delivery of this annual command performance.  The theatrics of the night aside, I felt as if President Bush was in command of himself and very in tuned to all Americans as he spoke – in tuned in that he said exactly what was on his mind with full cognizance of the effect his words had on each and every individual and group – whether or not he could count them as supporters.  More important than any of that, however, I believe that this man has the ability to come across as a true Christian.  Further, because of my own beliefs, I do not think he would have that ability if it were not inspired by God.

In this modern day atmosphere of political correctness, tolerance for stupidity and evil, and persecution of Christian morals and heritage, it takes a lot of good old fashioned guts for a president to mention God, God-given rights, and Christian Compassion as much as George W. Bush did in Tuesday’s State Of the Union Speech.  And, folks, that WAS Christian compassion that he alluded to multiple times in describing the American people.

In an Ideal America, it would not be government funding that was used to do all the things the president spoke of last night – it would be voluntary funding of compassionate human beings trying to build a better future for all of humanity.  You and I know that we do not live in an “Ideal America.”  Much of our potential human compassion is confiscated from us along with our over-burdensome taxes, which leaves us bitterly opposed to acting “charitably” too much of the time.  This president is working from within an already established framework of that confiscation and with a large percentage of a governing body that does not believe in limited government.  (Did anyone closely watch the left side of the aisle as the subject of tax cuts was mentioned?)  These people think that they don’t have ENOUGH of our money.  They think that because too many of us think they need a LOT of money to do the job of taking care of us!  In an Ideal America, we would not WANT the government to take care of us.

So, President Bush makes his case for tax cuts, the end to the marriage penalty, and the end of double taxation of profit dividends.  The “government should create jobs” side of the aisle shook its head in unison and smirked at the “ignorance” of letting people keep their own money to spend.  Let’s face it – these people’s understanding of economics stops at their GOVERNMENT paychecks!  The case has been proven repeatedly from JFK to Reagan, but still the ignorance of what makes our economy tick escapes the liberal mind.  But Bush presses on . . . and goads Congress to cough up the tax cuts sooner rather than later.

I was very pleasantly surprised that Mr. Bush did not seat “Mrs. Widow” from “Anytown, U.S.A” in the balcony to exploit for the cause of government provided prescription drugs.  Instead, he stated his commitment to see that people have a choice of health care in their retirement years.  His scathing remarks about this lawsuit happy society prompting most of our healthcare problems in this country were music to my ears.  Will the socialists never learn that their philosophy does not promote or provide for quality healthcare like a truly capitalist philosophy would?  Choice.  Unsubsidized competition.  Merit in excellence.  These are the things that will provide for, protect, and promote the very best health care in the world.  Many of the Mrs. Widows of this country, as well as their “representatives” do not understand these truths.

Let’s hear it for “energy independence” and reducing pollution.  How could the left stay in their seats on that one?  Drilling in ANWR wasn’t even mentioned!  The bombshell was new research monies to get those first hydrogen cars on the road before today’s babies are ready for their first cars.  Brilliant!  This from an “oil man” yet!  What can possibly be said in opposition to that one?  Perhaps only that the “research” has been done – but then we aren’t supposed to know that anyway.  At least Bush uttered the words, “hydrogen fuel” before a world audience that can no longer deny the possibilities!

Okay, the rhetoric about “education reform” was a big ho hum, but at least he didn’t beat it to death.  Back to the compassion, though, the part about children of prisoners was a nice touch.  This IS a big social problem, just as the hopelessly drug addicted individuals in this country are.  If there were no buyers, there would not be the necessity for a war on drugs.  The huge market simply wouldn’t exist.  Government funded drug programs have had a less than honorable report card in the past because the compassion was missing I believe.  Perhaps it is time to emphasize the compassion.  Without it, any program, government funded or not, has little chance for success.

I was not shocked by the pledge to pull Africa out of the Aides crisis.  Indeed, I think it needs doing.  If we are to believe what we have been told, THAT is, after all, where this terrible disease originated.  How can we hope to conquer this human disease monster without cutting off its head?  And who among those who so proudly hyphenate their Americanism could argue with such assistance to the continent of their ancestors?  What say ye, members of the “reparations” society?

I think this Christian president made it abundantly clear that he wants a ban on partial birth abortion.  That statement stands alone.  True Christian compassion is impossible in a country that refuses to protect the innocence of the unborn.  I don’t really care what goes on in the minds of those left aislers and others who rationalize the choice to kill babies!  Until Americans can right the terrible injustice of legalized abortion of ANY kind, or for ANY reason, we do not have the right to call ourselves compassionate or even intelligent!

That brings us to the question of Iraq and terrorism.  As I suspected, we do not know all there is to know of the threat or the danger to our country.  The elites pulling all the strings want it that way.  The president wants to follow the course of “liberating” the Iraqi people in a kill two birds with one stone war.  I think he made that pretty clear.  I do not believe he sees it as a war for oil – nor do I believe he is aimlessly rattling sabers any longer.  Whatever happens in the future, we can rest assured of one thing – George W. Bush has asked for and has been granted God’s blessing to lead this country.  Perhaps it is time for us to follow God’s example.  May our brave soldiers receive God’s blessing and protection as they go about the dirty business of fighting this battle and removing one more evil tyrant from power.

We do not need the blessing of the confounded United Nations or anyone else, as long as we have God’s hand on our shoulder.  That is the State Of America and that is the ultimate message that the people needed to hear.
