A Positive Thought

While we, who watch the goings on of government and society for signs of looming danger, must continually be concerned with the negative indications of anecdotal evidence, we must also be ever vigilant to point out positive signs of encouragement that all is not lost.  While it may seem in any given day of news reporting we can find much more of the former than the latter, we must take heart from every positive sign.

The American people have crossed political, ethnic, and spiritual lines to let their majority voice be heard by those who would rule them in a free society.  For our trouble we have been called racists, bigots, and selfish nativists by those also crossing all lines to embrace amnesty for illegal aliens – but we have forced the issue of debate on the subject.  That’s the positive thing here.  While the newest attempt to shove illegal aliens down our throats via Mexico has been carefully hammered out “in the shadows,” we insisted on viewing it in the full light of day.  Hoorah for us!

Of course the fat lady hasn’t sung yet on this, but I’d like to believe that the chorus is being written in our key.

Obviously our Congressional representatives were more than a little uncomfortable with the flood of protest they received from constituents on the immigration reform bill, but don’t think they will be above discounting it in future attempts to “do something” about this issue.  The president and other architects of this newest legislation have predicted that it will get passed, whether we like it or not.  All the votes that blocked cloture on the bill last week are on the auction block, and the bidding for them is in full swing.  Let’s make sure that the shadows do not engulf these proceedings.  It is too important to keep light on this debate so that we know just who is to blame if positive turns to negative, so that we can remove the offenders the next electoral chance we get.

The whole amendment process is being grossly misused on this piece of legislation in an attempt to appease those representatives opposing amnesty on our behalf.  I’m afraid that will be our undoing.  The point is being totally overlooked in the process – we don’t need new legislation!  The bill to strengthen border defenses and build the fence ARE ALREADY LAW – law that is being IGNORED.  The laws that require aliens to be here LEGALLY are likewise being ignored.  No amount of spelling it out more clearly in new legislation is going to insure that these things will be enforced.

We are spending millions of tax dollars every day that the legislature continues to haggle about this in Congress – dollars spent on the salaries of these people wasting time, and dollars spent to continue to support and offset the results of our disadvantaged, leaky southern border.  Meanwhile, the will of over seventy percent of the American people is being ignored.  Some democracy we have here, huh – and especially some Constitutional Representative Republic!

Behind closed doors, again in the shadows, deals are being made to shove this legislation through - decorated with a big bow just for us as a Fourth of July present.  The handful of holdouts in the Senate, (far less than the percentage of folks they are supposed to represent) are being played like a fine Stradivarius to eventually cave in to pressure.  We cannot trust what they tell us – we must only trust what we see.  If we don’t like what we see, we must continue to let them know it.
