United States Senate

Last edited January 2007

State legislatures elected U.S. Senators until 1913, when the Seventeenth Amendment changed that to the direct election of Senators by the people.  Many believe this to be a mistake that seriously damaged the overall checks and balances set in place by the Constitution.  United States Senators are elected for a six-year term.  Every two years approximately one-third of the Senate is up for re-election or replacement.  The Founders never intended for our legislators to become career politicians.  They are supposed to be public servants.  How many of these people do you think remember that?

These quick lookup reference pages take much time and research to develop.  If you find them helpful, or if you find any mistakes, please let me know via the feedback link at the bottom of this page.  Thanks!  Deb V
